In this episode of "Sustainable Packaging with Cory Connors," the host Cory Connors talks to Scott Edwards, the CEO and founder of Drop Water. Drop Water is a company that has developed a groundbreaking approach to packaging beverages, revolutionizing the way we consume drinks while reducing environmental impact. Scott Edwards explains how his journey began and the innovative ideas behind Drop Water.

A Visionary Idea:

Scott started his journey at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he studied industrial technology and packaging. His vision was to create sustainable beverage packaging that eliminated the need to transport the product fully made - and instead to make it at the customers' location. This idea aimed to reduce environmental impact caused by traditional packaging methods.

Sustainable Packaging:

Traditional packaging focuses on ensuring product survival during transportation and requires materials with oxygen barriers and high tensile strength. Drop Water's approach, on the other hand, removes the need for a shelf life - allowing for the use of unconventional materials that are not typically seen in the consumer beverage industry.

The Prototype:

Scott's senior project at Cal Poly involved creating a prototype for filling drinks at the point of sale in reusable bottles. This led to the development of machines that autonomously fill, seal, and deliver beverages in a matter of seconds, reducing the need for extensive transportation and storage of pre-made products.

Custom Branding:

Drop Water's packaging is highly customizable, allowing for co-branded and custom branding options for businesses, events, or locations. This feature makes it a unique marketing tool, especially for special events or venues like airports.

Eco-Friendly Materials:

The company uses eco-friendly materials, with packaging made from uncoated paperboard and biopolymers that can be customized based on location and environmental preferences. The choice of materials and design results in a product with a significantly lower environmental footprint.

The Future of Sustainable Packaging:

The potential applications for Drop Water's sustainable packaging are vast. It could find its place in a variety of settings, from theme parks to hotels to sporting events. With its low environmental impact and ease of customization, Drop Water's packaging could be the future of sustainable drink packaging.
